A list of the most commonly used English words was originally compiled by Edward William Dolch, PhD and published in his book, "Problems in Reading". Dolch culled the most frequently used words based on picture books, selecting 220 "service words" which children must automatically recognize in order to achieve reading fluency. Originally, Dolch excluded nouns from his main list. Later he compiled a separate 95-word list of nouns.
These nouns, along with his original list of sight words may be downloaded, cut, and stacked in order to practice these words for fluency.
You will find that some of these words cannot be sounded out; instead, they must be learned by sight.
